After class, I saw a web post that commented on how kids (since the beginning of the 20th century) are always looking for the latest technology among their Christmas presents.  Considering this, I did a little digging &#8211; and was surprised at how much (and how little) the technology has changed!<\/p>\n<p>Exhibit A: stereoscope slides, from the early 20th century (pre-World War I):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Stereoscope-Slide-Viewer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Stereoscope-Slide-Viewer-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"stereoscope-slide-viewer\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-555\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Stereoscope-Slide-Viewer-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Stereoscope-Slide-Viewer.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I first saw images made of this technology through a 90s IMAX movie called &#8220;Across the Sea of Time;&#8221; it&#8217;s amazing what high-quality clarity the pictures have, considering how much simpler the technology was \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Exhibit B: Viewmaster slides, from the 1970s\/80s:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/View-Master-Slide-Viewer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/View-Master-Slide-Viewer-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"view-master-slide-viewer\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/View-Master-Slide-Viewer-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/View-Master-Slide-Viewer.jpg 634w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I grew up using such a viewer; it was great fun to see stories play out before my eyes like a silent movie in stages.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Exhibit C: the Virtual Reality Theater headset, present day:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Virtual-Reality-Theater.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Virtual-Reality-Theater-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"virtual-reality-theater\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Virtual-Reality-Theater-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Virtual-Reality-Theater-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Virtual-Reality-Theater-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/danielgaul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Virtual-Reality-Theater.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These are tangible proof that Solomon&#8217;s axiom is true: &#8220;That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.&#8221; Ecclesiastes 1:9<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just this week, I introduced a student of mine to older means of viewing pictures.
